This site provides information on obtaining a license to practice optometry in California. If you are anticipating applying for a California license, you may wish to visit the Board’s website at www.optometry.ca.gov. Click on the link entitled "Licensee/Applicant Information" located on the left side of the Board’s homepage. To obtain an optometrist license in the State of California, you must: 1. Submit an official “APPLICATION FOR LICENSURE AS AN OPTOMETRIST”.
2. Submit an application fee of $275.00, plus a $42.00 fingerprint-processing fee.
3. Request your optometry school send directly to the Board, an official optometry school transcript showing that you were awarded a degree in “Doctor of Optometry”.
4. Have you fingerprints taken for background check using either electronic live scan, or paper fingerprint cards. Live scan forms and fingerprint cards can be obtained by submitting a request to the Board.
5. Have been successful in the NBEO Examination parts I, II, & III. You must request that an official transcript of these scores be sent directly to the Board.
6. Successfully complete the California Law and Regulations Examination. This exam is no longer taken in conjunction with part III of the NBEO examination. Please go to the Board's web site here for more information or call the Board at 916-575-7170.

To review or download the laws and regulations, you may visit the Board’s website and click on the link entitled “Laws & Regulations”. Then click on the link entitled “2006 Law Book”. Applications for licensure are good for one year from the date of receipt at the board's office.
