Part III CSE® and/or ISE Appeals Information

How to submit a CSE® and/or ISE Video Appeal:

Video appeals are submitted online at www.optometry.org/appeals.cfm

A CSE® and/or ISE video appeal includes the following processes:

  • a review of your entire videotaped performance by new sets of Independent Examiners
  • a review of your Candidate Score Report
  • a review of any Incident Reports you submitted at the conclusion of the exam
  • a review of any Examiner or Staff Incident Reports and/or comments
  • a review of any NCCTO® site irregularities

Appeal Fees:

  • CSE® (includes ISE performance): $450
  • ISE (stand-alone only): $150

When to submit an Appeal:

  • If you would like to appeal your CSE® or ISE results, you can do so within 30 days of the release of your score. Appeals will not be accepted outside of 30 days after your score has been released.

Time-frame for Appeal Results:

  • Appeals typically take 6 to 8 weeks.
  • This process will not take any less time than 6 weeks and will typically take closer to 8 weeks. Candidates should not expect to hear results until at least 6 weeks after submitting their appeal request.
  • There is no "rush" or "expedited" process for appeals.

How Candidates are notified of Appeal Results:

  • Candidates should expect to receive a letter of the appeal results in the mail at the address listed in your NBEO® profile.

Information to Include in your Appeal:

  • When submitting your appeal, it is recommended that you are specific in your justification.
  • Be sure to notate anything that you believe would have affected your exam score.

Registering and Taking CSE®/ISE before receiving Appeal Results:

  • If you appeal your failed CSE® score and want to sign-up to take the exam before receiving your appeal results, this is allowed. However, it is recommended that you select a testing date that will allow enough time for you to receive a decision on your appeal.
  • If you re-take CSE® before a decision has been made on your appeal and the Board does not uphold the appeal, the Board will report both scores and your appeal fee will not be refunded.
  • If you re-take CSE® before a decision has been made on your appeal and the Board does uphold the appeal, the Board also will report both scores and your appeal fee will be refunded.
  • As a reminder, the appeal process can take 6 to 8 weeks.
