In addition to the Part III examination, some candidates may be required to take a state board prepared examination regarding the statutes that govern the practice of optometry in that state. A score of a state law exam administered by the NBEO must be obtained directly from that state board; it will not appear on the NBEO Score Report.

The states currently requiring a State Law examination administered by the National Board are:

California
Missouri
Oregon
Georgia
Nebraska
South Dakota
Indiana
Nevada
* Texas
Minnesota
North Dakota

* Texas Law - Only candidates in their last semester of optometry school may sit for the Texas Law exam, provided that have filed an application with the Texas Optometry Board.

For the Georgia, Nevada, and Texas law exams, candidates must register with both the State Board and the NBEO, to be eligible to take the exam at an NBEO administration. Please do not register for these exams with the NBEO unless you have already registered, or plan to register, with these states.

While While the state board written examinations will be administered by representatives of the National Board, the state boards examination is not a section of the Part III examination, and the National Board will have no responsibility for the content or scoring of any state board examination. Candidates can request on the application form to be registered for one or more of these state law examinations. There is a non-refundable fee of $70 which entitles candidates to take as many of the state law examinations administered by the National Board, as they choose, during one administration.

It is the candidate's responsibility to contact each respective state's optometry board well in advance of the administration date to arrange to receive the statutes, regulations, and other relevant reference materials. These materials will not be provided by the National Board. Please note that a state may require receipt of licensure application and fee payment in advance of the examination.
