Candidates who apply by the deadline date are assured that the written examinations can be taken at the site selected. For the Part III exam, candidate capacity is constrained by the size of the clinical facility; therefore candidates are encouraged to apply early. The National Board uses the following criteria in placing candidates at specific Clinical Skills test centers:

  • Student candidates will be given first priority to take the examination at their respective school or college. The National Board will make every effort to assure that currently enrolled students who apply prior to the deadline date can take the exam at their home institution. Students who are away from their home institution on externship, or apply for a different testing center than their home institution for any other reason, will be assigned to the requested testing center only if space is available after candidates who attend that institution have been accommodated. Such allocations are on a first-come, first-served basis. If space is not available at the requested testing center, the candidates will be assigned to another institution that can accommodate the candidate.
  • Graduate candidates who apply by the deadline date will be assigned to their requested testing center following the assignment of student candidates, on a first-come, first-served basis. If graduate candidates cannot be assigned to the preferred testing center, they will be assigned to a different testing center based on availability, with as much consideration as possible given to required travel distance.

The NBEO reserves the right to assign the candidate to a test center which meets the scheduling needs of the NBEO. As such, this could mean that the candidate might be required to take the examination at a site other than that requested by the candidate, which may require considerable travel. Due to capacity restraints, the candidate might not be able to take the Clinical Skills examination at their school.
